The iron ore
and steel industry are at the origin of the Moselle region.
With more than 30,000 people in Moselle, it is the largest
employer. As a transversal activity, it gathers manufacturers
and automobile equipment suppliers as well as railway,
and railroad companies working for the construction industry
or house facilities (VIESMANN) in addition to many other
activities.

In Moselle, the metal industry
is represented from end to end. Starting with the iron
and steel industry to the first processing (drawing, shaping,
surface treatment) to the finished product (smelting ,
forging, stamping, folding, welding, turning, milling,
gears cutting, assembling, bolts or screw manufacturing,
public facilities, alternators, cylinders, industrial
furnaces, engine and special engine)
Very few if any "clock industry parts" (small
springs and other small clock industry parts) or "connector
industry parts" are manufactured in Moselle. |

Well-recognized
metallurgic groups are represented:
- ARCELOR, ISPAT, CORUS in the steel industry,
- LES BRONZES D’INDUSTRIE in the smelting work industry
(centrifuge),
- Automatic aluminum smelting work for the automotive
industry

PRECILOR, STERI, and PONTICELLI, are able to deal with
mechanics and chemistry maintenance sites. |

Special machine manufacturing holds
a particular place in Moselle with more than 40 companies
employing more than 2,000 employees. |
| |
|
 |
This sector gathers subsidiary companies
of major groups specializing in the manufacturing of special
machines in mining materials, milling, various convoying
systems and SMBs of 10 to 30 people specialized in the

Thanks to targeted training activities
and successful marketing programs, a state-region program,
spread out over several years, was developed to promote
this activity.
The special machine-manufacturing sector has the most
complete program. From engine operators to engineers,
it combines on-the-job training and national education.
Furthermore, at the time of the transformation of its
activities, the Moselle region decided to emphasize technical
trainings. Bachelor degrees are thus commonplace and the
areas of study are very broad. With the cooperation of
companies, not only through on-the-job training programs
and the national education system the framework of sponsorships
is very successful. .
Graduate education promoting bi-national trainings as
well as part-time trainings is emphasized with four engineering
schools.

In the field of public research, laboratories
of the faculty of science, IUT, ENSAM, and ENIM make the
Moselle region one of the finest sites of research in
industrial processing. The Welding Institute in Thionville-Yutz,
in addition to all technologies of welding, including
the largest carbon-welding robot in the world, has laboratories
and equipment to carry out all the mechanical tests of
validation and ratification. In the private research sector,
IRSID, the first iron and steel European research center,
gathered its research on processes and sheet metal for
the automobile sector in the Moselle region. |
